Balayage is one of the biggest trends in decades: a free-handed hair coloring technique used to create sun-kissed, natural-looking highlights. Used as an alternative to foil highlighting, colorists essentially paint color and/or lightener to create depth and dimension, adding rich, layered color to create a more naturally highlighted look. A big bonus to balayaging is the grow-out period: lightener is not applied from the root, so the grow-out looks more natural, allowing your fabulous color to last longer. Balayage uses hand-painting technique that processes without the thermal value of foils, allowing more of a minimal-medium lift with soft, subtle painted highlights. This technique will concentrate lightner on the ends and mid-lengths, and feather up delicately towards the root, unlike highlights which START there and sweep down broadly and boldly. Over time with multiple sessions and repeating this technique, the hair will get lighter with some warmth left in the hair. If you’re looking for an alternative to balayage, consider highlights with a shadow root!
